Abstract
Long distance freight transportation always plays crucialrole in driving social and economics expansion by meansof transporting and distributing goods to different regionsin a country. In Thailand, the demand of road freighttransportation has been continuously growing, while thatof railway mode tends to decline. According to statistics, road and rail modes share 90% and 2% of freighttransportation, respectively. Road traffic congestion canusually be observed both in in-urban and inter-urbanareas. However, such congestion is associated with highertransportation cost, more fuel consumption andenvironmental impacts, which are direct/indirect costs tologistics transportation service provider resulting in anincrease in total cost of production. To the public and private players in the transport industry,rail/road intermodal transport policy is a key nationalagenda. To realise this policy, freight transportationactivities should link to several transport modes insingle/multiple co-ordinate freight movement. However, inadequacy of railway infrastructure and facilities causesdisruptive intermodal activities. In the areas where thetraffic volume is high, track doubling needs to beconstructed. Apart from increasing track capacity, theexpansion of supporting facility and in-land/at-portinfrastructure are also essential. This present work aims to discuss current status andproblems associated with the long distance freighttransportation in Thailand, and to suggest solution toachieve the improvement, which is the key link to theimplementation of intermodal transportation policy. Thefocus of this paper is, however, given onto opportunitiesof railway infrastructure redress as a main tool to realisethis national policy.
