Over almost a decade, the AEC countries(ASEAN Economics Community) has been experiencing a longperiod of economic growth, leading to transition from apredominantly agricultural economy to an industrializedeconomy. Other than the skills of the people and the availabilityof resources, this feat has been primarily the result of massivelocal and foreign investment. Most of investment has occurredin the many ASEAN countries, who are manufacturers, such asThailand, Laos, Cambodia and Myanmar. As may be expected,the industries expand, and with this growth the demand forinfrastructure system especially in transportation systemsupporting logistics activities increases.Long distance freight transportation distribution plays crucialrole in driving AEC social and economics expansion by meansof transporting and distributing goods to different regions in acountry. However, the demand of road freight transportation hasbeen continuously growing, while that of railway mode tends todecline. However, such congestion is associated with highertransportation cost, more fuel consumption and environmentalimpacts, which are direct/indirect costs to logisticstransportation service provider resulting in an increase in totalcost of production.To the public and private players in the transport logisticsindustry, rail/road intermodal transport policy is a key nationalagenda. To realise this policy, freight transportation activitiesshould link to several transport modes in single/multiple coordinatefreight movement. However, inadequacy of railwayinfrastructure and facilities causes disruptive intermodalactivities. In the areas where the traftic volume is high, trackdoubling needs to be constructed. Apart from increasing trackcapacity, the expansion of supporting facility and in-land/at-portinfrastructure are also essential.This present work aims to discuss current status and problemsassociated with the long distance freight transportation inThailand, and to suggest solution to achieve the improvement, which is the key link to the implementation of intermodal transportation policy. The focus of this paper is, however, given onto opportunities of railway infrastructure redress as a main tool to realise this national policy.
