Abstract
Every year, thousands of students enter the admission process to apply for their seatsin the university. In the process, different stations e.g. buying forms, checkingdocuments, interviewing, paying fees, etc. sequentially connect to each other. At eachstation, certain numbers of officers are allocated to help and process studentrequirements. However, many students at a particular station have to wait in the queuefor a long time in order to get the service since there are too many students whileamount of officers and resources are limited. Consequently, students may spend verylong time in the entire admission process. In order to speed up the total time in systemfor students in the process, the bottleneck station must be determined and extraresources should be allocated or a new work order is introduced to reduce the servicetime at this station. In this research, the simulation software, AweSim® version 3.0,is used to model the existing admission process, measure its performance, and identifybottleneck stations. Then, different improvement alternatives are proposed andsimulated by AweSim®. Results of all alternatives are compared to their additionalinvestments. Finally, the best alternative is selected using the most effective approach.
