Abstract
In this case study, an apparel company that has its ordersmanufactured by a few dozen of factories located invarious countries in Asia. An order is a specific style ofclothes. The apparel production is highly labor-intensiveand it involves learning curve improvement, especially forthe sewing operations. The longer a sewing operatorworks on the same operation, the higher efficiency theoperator can achieve. Similarly, the larger quantity afactory produces a product type, the higher efficiency thefactory can achieve. Normally, only one factory isselected for production of an order due to logisticconsideration and production efficiency. In this casestudy, we formulate a mixed integer program to assign theorders to factories with the objective of maximizing thecorporate profit. By solving the mixed integer programoptimally or heuristically and using the actual planningdata, we are able to increase the overall plannedproduction quantity significantly.
