Abstract
The aims of this research were (1) to study the antimicrobial activity of 25 species in fivefamilies of Thai medicinal plants which affect six important food microorganismsconsisting of Bacillus cereus TISTR687, Escherichia coli TISTR780, SalmonellaTyphimurium TISTR292, Pseudomonas aeruginosa TISTR781, Staphylococcus aureusTISTR118 and Candida albicans TISTR5779; and (2) to study free radical scavengingactivity. The crude extracts from 25 species in five families had only one family from theCaesalpiniaceae family, which included Caesalpinia sappan L., Cassia. timoriensis DC.,Cas. siamea Lam. and Senna garrettiana Graib. It displayed remarkable antimicrobialactivity, especially on B. cereus and Staph. aureus, while other families crude extractsshowed antimicrobial activity in some species and were specific in some microorganisms. When testing preliminary free radical scavenging activity, it was found that almost all thecrude extracts of 25 species in five families had activity, except Eclipta prostrata Linn.,Artemisia vulgaris Linn. and Bridelia ovata Decne.
