The purpose of this research was to study the need for and lack of qualified engineersin Thailand’s industrial estates. The results from 508 questionnaires in industrialestates found that 33.85% of the entrepreneurs anticipate that in the next 3 yearsthey will need an average of 3.09 engineers each, making the total need approximately2,982 engineers. With regard to the lack of an engineering workforce, 37.2% of theentrepreneurs indicated that there was a dearth of engineers, with each establishmentneeding 2.06 engineers on average, and the total lack is approximately 2,757engineers. Results show that mechanical engineers are the most needed. In respect ofthe qualifications, respondents rated knowledge and expertise, diligence, integrity,endurance, computer and IT skills, language skills, discipline, license, humanrelationship skills, creativity, and leadership as important qualifications. Concerningpay, the study shows that newly graduated engineers earn an average income of atleast 12,500 baht, engineers with less than 5 years experience earn at least 15,000baht and engineers with more than 5 years experience earn at least 19,000 bahtin average. From interviews of 9 experts, it was found that there is no lack ofengineers in terms of quantity, but in terms of qualifications and intellectual creativity.In terms of a tendency toward shortages, the study revealed that the most noticeable need was in the food industry, followed by health, energy, service and tourism,agriculture, motor vehicle, environment and bio-chemical industry. It can be clearlyseen that an engineering workforce is essential to these industries. Regardingqualifications, language skills, computer and IT skills were rated as importantqualifications. Concerning pay, it was revealed that newly graduated engineers earnabout 15,000-20,000 baht/month, engineers with less than 5 years experiences earnabout 25,000-30,000 baht/month and engineers with more than 5 years experiencesearn more than 30,000 baht/month on average.
