This research investigates the forms of communication by local politicians, and thefactors influencing their selection of specific forms of communication. In addition, thisresearch also examines their problems of communication. In-depth interviews, focusgroupinterviews and non-participation observation over a period of three weeks wereutilized in this research. The sample consisted of ten local politicians and local peoplein ten provinces in southern Thailand, namely, Songkhla, Nakorn Sri Thammarat,Phuket, Trung, Satuun, Kabi, Phungya, Suratthani, Ranong, and Pattalung. The resultsindicate that three forms of communication are used by the politicians: face-to-faceinteraction with villagers, communication via various media, and communication informal and non-formal meetings. The results also indicate that the local politiciansstrongly considered the factor of budget, media efficiency, strengths and weaknessesof the medium, the appropriateness of the form of communication relative to theirobjectives, the degree to which the message met the needs of local people, theappropriateness of the means of communication to the situation of problems in thelocality, the appropriateness of the means of communication in terms of local customsand cultures, and the convenience of using the means of communication, thecapability of the president of the tambon administrative organization, the level ofeducation of the target group, and the ability of the means of communication to makea lasting impression on local people. The obstacles arising in communication werethose concerning the communicator, the message, the channel of communication, andthe recipient of communication.
