Abstract
Nowadays, tourism has become a significant industry supporting Thailand’s economy. It generates higher revenues than exports. Tourism revenues are counted among thetop two earners. Koh Lan is an important tourist place in Chonburi province, nearPattaya City. However, increasing numbers of tourists have exposed problems relatedto the efficiency of infrastructure systems and facilities, making effective logisticsplanning and management an urgent need for future development. The objective of the study was to examine an appropriate pattern of tourists demandforecasting for Koh Lan. The study applied a principle of logistics management to thetourism industry under the hypothesis that if there were an efficient and effectivesystem to move tourists from Pattaya to Koh Lan, including provision of an efficienttransport networking system, it would increase and support the tourism industry onKoh Lan. Data was collected from primary and secondary sources, such as aquestionnaire, observation and in-depth interviews. The sampling included tourists, entrepreneurs and government agencies. The questionnaire was distributed to 270subjects and 245 questionnaires were returned, representing 91 percent. Validity andreliability were examined by using statistical methods and experts. Demand forecastingon tourism in the next decade was statistically calculated in order to provide improved infrastructure systems and facilities to support the growth and expansion of tourism inthe next decade. The information was used for planning and developing infrastructuresystems and facilities, including studying transport networking and logistics systems tosupport the future growth of tourists in the next decade. The results showed that timeseries would be an appropriate pattern for demand forecasting. Tourists are expectedto double in number in the next decade compared to the present. This data was usedfor designing transport and logistics systems from Pattaya City to Koh Lan. At present, more than 1,500 trips by ferry and speed-boats are trips by ferry and speed-boats areneeded to transport tourists to Koh Lan. Effectively designed infrastructure systemsand facilities would support sustainable tourism on Koh Lan. Furthermore, the studyshowed that there is ample scope to build new and exciting places and also toprovide an appropriate plan for managing environmental pollution.
