Abstract
This paper introduces the free software Instat Plus, PSPP and OpenStat as alternatives for researchers doing statistical analysis of sample data without having to resort to violating software copyrights. Instat Plus is software for teaching statistics, developed by the Statistical Services Centre at Reading University, UK. It is easy to use, featuring help menus with usage instructions and examples of statistical analysis in a self-explanatory tutorial guide. PSPP replaces proprietary SPSS software, replicating the look and command syntax but with fewer menus than SPSS. PSPP can export to PDF, PS (PostScript),HTML, ODT or TXT format and has a complete user manual. OpenStat is software written by Dr. William G.Miller from lowa State University. This software handles statistical analysis ranging from basic to sophisticated with an SPSS-like user interface. The explanation of each task in the help menus is clear and succinct in order to make the program easier to use.
