Abstract
This study investigates Thai undergraduate students’ attitudes towards money, using Lim and Teo’s (1997) money attitudes scale. Data collection was conductedduring July 5-9, 2010 on a sample of 364 undergraduate students attendingmanagement courses at Prince of Songkla University in Thailand. Factor analysisconfirmed all eight money attitude dimensions to be distinct and relevant. Specifically, logistic regression analysis distinguished gender differences on the power moneydimension and noted the impact of year of study (cohort) on the obsession dimension. The results indicated males to be more likely to view money as a source of powerand the seniors (final year students) to be obsessed with money. This reflects men’svalues and role in the family associated with power and leadership, and studentpreoccupation with money matters as they mature and prepare to leave school for theworkplace. However, this is in contrast with Lim and Teo’s (1997: 378) findingsconducted on a sample of Singaporean undergraduates, which indicated males viewedmoney as a tool for evaluation. Additionally, a study on a sample of working adults inBangkok did not find significant differences in money perception between thetwo gender groups. This opens up discussions on the observations and uniquecharacteristics of the undergraduate sample, and offers better understanding of theyoung adults’ outlook on money. Such insights are of practical importance, given thatmoney affects personal lives, financial management and work performance.
