Abstract
The Department of Applied Statistics, School of Science, University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce, conducted a Census Project for The Gem and Jewelry Institute of Thailand (Public Organization) (GIT) with the purposes of 1) to acquire information with respect to the number, size, type, location and diversity of enterprises engaging in the businesses of gems and jewelry in Thailand and 2) to acquire the number and types of labor, including the level of education of personnel in enterprises engaging in supporting industries. The survey also represented a census of supporting industries in the framework of people and business places throughout Thailand by compiling secondary information from related agencies in both the public and private sectors. For example, the Department of Business Development and Department of export Promotion, the Ministry of Commerce; the Department of Industrial Works, the Ministry of Industry, and the Department of Labour Protection and Welfare, the Ministry of Labour, the Community Development Department, the Ministry of the Interior, the National Statistical Office, various Tambon Administration Organizations and related Associations, as well as the field surveys with a random selection of sample business places in the provinces essential to the Thai business and industries supporting gems and jewelry industries. Given the objectives stated above, the surveys were also designed to represent a census for information unobtainable from the related offices, such as the number of labourers and their educational background. The Project revealed that a total of 265 businesses were engaged in supporting industries for Thai gems and jewelry. The businesses in Bangkok were the most diverse, with the central region as follow up. Most enterprises were large. The majority of products were equipment and tools, representing 66.79 percent. The labour of supporting industries comprised 13,106 persons. Most labourers were secondary school graduates.
