Abstract
Thailand's future logistics direction has become a hot issue among academics since the formation of Thailand's Strategic Logistics Development Plan of 2007-2011. The result reveals that there are several factors affecting changes to Thailand's future logistics system. The areas include the opening of trade liberalization between Thailand and other countries, and becoming an ASEAN Economic Community member. Other issues include intense competition between countries, complex and sophisticated needs of customers, and a need for cost control and improving service levels. The objective of this study is to examine the future direction of changes in Thailand's logistics system in the next decade. It studies factors influencing the changing patterns of logistics systems, and how to manage the changes. The study surveyed 20 logistics entrepreneurs who graduated with a Master's Degree in the logistics area using in-depth interviews. It also collected data through focus groups in 40 logistics companies and the data was processed and analyzed by applying a comparative study method. The results show that the changing direction of Thailand's logistics systems in the next decade is composed of seven issues. They consist of increasing the use of information systems in the logistics and supply chain, strategic alliances, green logistics, transportation development to reduce costs and improve service levels, liberalizing trade and joining ASEAN Economic Community (AEC), global outsourcing and others (e.g. human rights, consumer behavior). Furthermore, there are pressing issues relating to future business operations, which are cost management and customer loyalty, including continuously improving service quality and managing customer experiences.
