Abstract
Economic development focusing mainly on industrial revolution is considered unstable or unsustainable. As a result of the industrial revolution, a number of problems, especially the overgrowth of modern urbanization and excessive consumption have emerged. These have led to excessive disturbance and exploitation of the environment in urban areas. To solve such problems, management of community consumption based on the concept of a suff iciency economy should be implemented. This article aims at researching ways in which the environment can be managed, based on the concept of "Urban Sufficiency," so as to relieve the effects of environmental changes in urban areas. The study found that the underlying principle of "Urban Sufficiency" is to meet demands at moderate levels. It begins with fulfilling the basic needs prior to meeting other requirements at higher levels. This concept is also relevant to Thai communities, which are interconnected and have different levels of sufficiency. Consequently, urban environmental effects can be reduced.
